01 | Intake Consultation

01 | Intake Consultation

The intake consultation is a 50-minute session designed to establish a strong foundation for your child’s care.

During this initial meeting, the assigned psychologist will conduct a comprehensive review of your child’s developmental history, current concerns, and your family’s goals.  This process allows us to recommend the most appropriate assessment pathway and develop a tailored plan moving forward.

Important Note for Parents
To ensure that school-based observations remain as natural and objective as possible, we kindly request that the intake consultation be attended by parents or guardians only.  This allows the observation to be conducted without prior introduction to the psychologist and provides space for an open and thorough discussion of clinical history and planning.

02 | Psychological Assessment

02 | Psychological Assessment

A psychological assessment is more than a series of tests—it is a structured process designed to better understand your child’s unique profile. It helps answer important questions many parents ask:
How does my child perceive the world? In what kinds of settings do they thrive most? What situations may contribute to challenges?

At 1st STEP Counseling Center, we move beyond surface-level impressions.  Using a multidimensional approach, we develop a comprehensive understanding of your child’s cognitive abilities, learning patterns, social functioning, and everyday adaptive skills.

We Explore Key Areas Including:
 Cognitive Profile
How your child processes information, manages attention, and approaches problem-solving.
 Academic Skills
Identification of specific strengths and challenges in reading, writing, mathematics, and other areas of learning.
 Behavioral & Social Dynamics
Understanding emotional regulation, behavioral patterns, and interpersonal functioning.
 Real-World Context
Gathering objective insights from both school and home environments.

What we discover together:
By integrating these perspectives, we provide clarity on:
✔ The “Why”
Understanding the underlying factors contributing to specific challenges.
✔ The “How”
Identifying evidence-based strategies and supports that are most effective.
✔ The “Strengths”
Highlighting the unique abilities that can be leveraged to promote growth and success.

Our Philosophy:
We view psychological assessment as a powerful tool—a compass that helps families navigate challenges with clarity and confidence, and find the right fit for support at both school and home.
